We decided to switch to this cat food since our cat has digestive issues and her nutrition requires more attention. After the last check up we treated colitis, and then its consequences. Our cat has become thinner and had a bad appetite. We were forbidden to feed her human food. She only had to lick a plate to have a relapse, and have bloody stools and vomit.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do with her issues, which are the consequences of her life on the street, and we can only normalize her condition by choosing a right diet for her. This feline food has been prescribed is a part of this diet.

Product description:

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Gastrointestinal Fiber Response HF dry is a highly palatable, complete and balanced diet for adult maintenance. The formula contains optimal levels of fiber to help aid in the management of fiber responsive colitis and associated diarrhea or constipation. Additionally, the formula is enriched with prebiotics, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids

It has a few contradictions, so you’d better ask your vet about it first.

Ingredients:

Brewers rice, chicken by-product meal, chicken fat, corn, corn gluten meal, wheat gluten, psyllium seed husk, natural flavors, chicory, egg product, potassium chloride, fish oil, calcium sulfate, grain distillers dried yeast, fructooligosaccharides, DL-methionine, potassium phosphate, salt, vegetable oil, hydrolyzed yeast, choline chloride, taurine, vitamins [DL-alpha tocopherol acetate (source of vitamin E), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), niacin supplement, biotin, riboflavin supplement, D-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin A acetate, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement], L-lysine, marigold extract (Tagetes erecta L.), trace minerals [zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, copper proteinate], rosemary extract, preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid.

This food is available in different sizes. Usually, we opt for smaller bags since our kitty is pretty finicky and prefers the smell of fresh food. There are many products in the line, and they all have similar packagings, so one has to be careful when buying this in a store.

There is a cup which is easy to measure out the product with, and a nice table that helps count how much your kitty needs per day.

I use a pin to close the bag and protect its content from sun and air, because otherwise, the food would quickly go stale and become rather harmful.

The smell is strong and salty; it reminds me of beer snacks. The cat loves it, she starts meowing when she smells it. I always put a bowl of water next to her feeder.

The granules are medium, triangular and pretty solid. They don’t crumble and feel oily, plus they leave stains on my hands. Our vet suggested I moisten the granules, but my pet prefers them solid, despite a few missing teeth. She finishes her meal quite quickly. As a rule, one portion contains a half of her days ration.

I feed her twice a day, and she must finish her meal within a half an hour. After that, I hide the bag and store it in a dark place till the next time. It’s really important to do so to avoid oxidation, because even dry good may go stale when left in a bowl.

Sometimes she eats up her daily allotment, sometimes she doesn’t - it depends on the season, her health condition and some other factors. There was a time when she refused to eat Gastro Intestinal and rushed to her fellow cat’s bowl.

With this food, she doesn’t have digestive issues like before, her fur looks better and she doesn’t puke as often as she used to. Gradually, she started to gain weight. Her appetite has been improved and she refuses to eat only if it’s extremely hot outside.

Verdict: this cat food does its job and prevents digestive issues. I see that she feels better and recovers after her illness. The food is really nice, both its packaging and the food itself.

I like that the amount of food is easy to measure out, and I know that my cat isn’t only well-fed, but also healthy.

Pros:

  • helps against digestive issues
  • clear directions that helps calculate the amount of food your cat needs
  • my pet likes its smell
  • her health condition is much better now

Cons:

  • pricey
