We had our first problems in the hospital when my newborn tried to latch onto my inverted nipple but couldn’t. She did her best, she kept looking for it and cried and bit into my breasts so they were cracked and sore on the next day. I had no choice but to buy these nipple shields immediately.Description:
Easy latch on for your baby
Your baby can easily latch on through the shield and create a seal.
Made with odorless, taste free, ultra-fine silicone
The Philips Avent Nipple Protectors are made of an odorless, tastless ultra-fine silicone.
Shaped to allow skin contact with baby
Your baby can still feel and smell your skin and continue to stimulate your milk supply while suckling, and will return easily to the breast once your nipples are healed.
Protect sore nipples during breastfeeding
Philips Avent Nipple Protectors are only designed for use when you have sore or cracked nipples and should be used with health professional advice.
My nipple protectors are of standard size, the silicone nipple is just huge (20 mm.)
The area which is supposed to stick to the breast is curved.
Usage
When the baby is sucking milk, the nipple is being pulled in into the shield and milk flows freely without contact with the baby’s mouth, making it easy for the baby to suck it out.
Unfortunately, the nipple shield tends to slide off and never stick to the breast for more than two minutes. Do you know how a newborn is looking for a nipple? The baby sways his head from side to side, and when she tries to latch onto the nipple, the shield simply comes off. My husband had to hold the shield with his hands, which led to another problem - the milk was spilled.
I tried to draw how it looks:
1. Option, horizontal
Pro:
Protects the sore nipple
Cons:
slides off. Must be held with hands.
- the milk leaks through the little hole, when the nipple shield slides off due to baby’s chin movements
2 Option, upright
Pro:
Covers the sore nipple
Cons:
Slides off right after the baby latches on the nipple.
3 Option, slantways
The same pros and cons remain.
Conclusion: the shields truly protects the cracked nipples and eases the process of breastfeeding for a while. However, if you have inverted nipples and therefore you are forced to use them every time, then no, I don’t recommend these nipple shields.
