Pros: almost no dusting when picking up with a brush, good pigmentation, mirror, staying power, stylish-looking compact, tightly pressed
Cons: price, the color looks different in the refill and skin

Once spring is here, I start to do brighter makeup looks more and more. I also noticed that I want to use more highlighters on a daily basis.

There are some highlighter babes in my makeup stash: some of them are my faves, while the others are really versatile and are for day to day wear. There’s also the third type of the highlighters which are multi-taskers and can be used for different reasons.

My review today is dedicated to a highlighter which I expected in awe but in reality it turned out to be not among my favorite products and I can't even admit that I’m very much upset about it.

So, meet the American branded Jouer Cosmetics highlighter which I received in a gifted Goody Bag from Cult Beauty.

In my Goody Bag I found a mini of this highlighter which has only 2g, that is almost two times less than the full-sized product.

  • Package

The mini is the same package as the full-sized product - in general it looks expensive and beautiful: mirrored compact made of plastic, but still looks very expensive and metal-like. It opens up easily and quickly when I take the lid up slightly up with my nail. The big advantage of this product is the mirror inside. It seems to be a minor feature, but still for me it’s so important.

The mirror was protected with a seal. I don’t throw it away, but keep it to protect the mirror from the highlighter dust.

On the back of the compact you’ll find the product’s info, as well as the name of the shade (mine is Rose Gold) and the weight of the content.

I can’t tell you the way the full-sized product looks, since I don’t have it but my mini came in a beautiful fabric pouch. Inside there were also instructions.

  • Product characteristics

The highlighter is tightly pressed. No, it’s perfectly pressed, guys! There’s almost no dusting when I pick it up with a brush. It’s a massive plus for the product.

The shimmer particles are the tiniest ever and even in the daylight they are difficult to make out. But you can see them well in the flashlight with your naked eye.

The product is absolutely unscented.

My highlighted in the color Rose Gold looks very beautiful in the compact. When I opened it for the first time, I immediately fell for it! It was exactly the very shade which I really wanted to have in my little stash. It’s a gorgeous rose gold color with pink undertones and true golden cast of the highest fineness.

Here are the pictures of the product in different angles (the first photo was taken far away from the sunlight while the second was taken closer. Look at this beautiful shimmer shine of the micro-particles):

In the swatches the product looks different to what we can see in the compact. This is a big disadvantage, alas. And I can say that it looks completely different against my skin. On the skin the color doesn’t look complicated and peach-like, but it somehow turns into a plain boring golden shade. And you know, I’ve already got a lot of golden highlighters. Sad

  • Swatches of the Jouer Cosmetics Highlighter

The product shows a beautiful and delicate glow if I stay close to the window, but still it’s visible to human eyes. In the photo below I touched the refill with my fingers twice.

  • Use of the highlighter and photo-results

I don’t like this Jouer Cosmetics because of its boring and nasty looking golden glow that it gives on my skin. But I still love it for the properties it has and the wear times it shows.

This golden glow will look stunning against tanned skin and it’ll look rather odd on the skin after winter or if your complexion is naturally pale.

Yet still I use this highlighter even though my skin is rather pale but I also use it as an eyeshadow.

Here the Jouer Cosmetics highlighter is applied on my eyelids and cheekbones (2 layers):

Then I darkened the outer V-s with the black shade infused with golden shimmer from the Makeup Revolution Salvation Palette Hard Day eyeshadow palette.

This highlighters work wonders if I use it as an eyeshadow. This is exactly what I want to see in my daytime makeup. During wear, the product doesn’t crease and in general it stays on well. It can travel down by the end of the day only if you have oily lids.

I also like using this shimmer highlighter while blending the darker shades. For example, I like mixing it with the dark shades for a more subtle effect and also add a little bit of the highlighter to matte eyeshadows for the pearlized casting.

One more makeup look with a bright eyeliner by Too Faced and this highlighter:

The product is in the inner corners of my eyes and under the browbones:

The same makeup with the highlighter on my cheek bones.

As all the highlighting products, I apply this one over all the high points of my face: cheekbones, brow bones, inner corners, bridge of the nose, tip of the nose and a Cupid’s bow for sure.

The highlighter is easy to pick up with a brush as it doesn’t go dusty or anything. But I guess that I’ve already mentioned it. The pigmentation is above all the praise! One touch is enough to get a well-visible line of the glow on my skin. It’s a standout feature for me since there are highlighters in my collection which I have to layer a lot for a beautiful and visible glow.

As for the brushes, here I use two special highlighter brushes by Real Techniques and E.L.F. I can also use two other brushes for makeup application when I apply this product to the inner corners of the eyes and a Cupid’s bow. One is by Real Techniques again and the other is by Eco Tools.

Here are the brushes I use to apply the product on my skin. Two of them, which are bigger I use to apply the highlighter on my cheekbones and the smaller brushes are for the inner corners of the eyes, brow bone and Cupid's bow

Over time I can see that the product has become more chunky texture-wise. Yet it still remains good. You know, it’ll be a sin to assess the technical characteristics of this highlighter with less than 5 stars but at the same time - looking in the mirror, I just don’t understand how this might have happened. I can see such a beautiful and expensive looking rose gold color in the package and on my skin it turns into a boring and plain golden shade.

_______

I want to draw your attention that this is my subjective opinion, since I judge it according to my own expectations.

Maybe if I had a darker skin tone, I would have been raving about this highlighter.

_______

The product holds on well, till the moment when I remove it. It doesn’t affect my skin negatively. It’s very comfortable while wear and I don’t feel it on my skin at all. The texture is extremely lightweight. It’s superfluous mentioning the spending of this highlighter, because powder products usually go a really long way, it’s true.

Overall

  • the product is tightly pressed, hence it doesn’t dust

  • the pigmentation is insane

  • beautiful and stylish-looking packaging

  • mirror provided

  • the color looks different in the refill pan and on my skin (in the refill it looks more peachy-like and on my face I can see only dull golden glow without any hint of a pink undertone)

The Jouer highlighter in the color Rose Gold has become a small disappointment for me. This is all because I expected to see some other shade on my skin. I think I’ll keep on using it as an eyeshadow. Maybe in summer, when I get tanned, I’ll try to use it as a highlighter again.

My rate is 4 stars.
