The honest truth is that I’ve never actually stood by this popular brand.
In fact I didn’t even fall for the super hyped up Lash Sensational mascara. And you know what… I wouldn’t have gotten attracted to this relatively recent edition, even though it has a pretty pink package, if it was not for the coconut thing. I’m obsessed with everything coconut, so I couldn't help it.
Read about my own experience with the Total Temptation and how I ‘got coconuted’ below:
✎ Product details:
Introducing Maybelline's most addictive volume… get ready to be obsessed! Tempt every sense! Feel the soft touch. Experience the sensuous glide. Indulge in the irresistible scent. Give in to Maybelline New York’s Total Temptation Washable Mascara! The lengthening and buildable volume mascara features a creamy and whipped formula to create irresistibly soft, separated and dense lashes coat after coat. Infused with coconut oil for nourishing and sensual glide application without clumps or globs. Packaging may vary, what you receive may not be what is reflected on site.
✎ Size: 8.6ml
✎ The use:
The mascara doesn’t go such a long way, but I’d like to point out that the product changed its formula and became thicker about a month after opening, which made it only worse.
It feels like in about 3 months it will look like a playdough.
✎ Outer look:
The tube looks pretty cheap, even though the design is bright and eye-catching.
It’s made of matte plastic. It has a prolonged shape that is a little bit slanted on both sides. I wouldn’t have understood such a description myself, so here are pictures:
The tube is quite big but fits in my hand very well.
It looks almost like new over time. The only thing is that the nozzle of the tube gets messy right after the first use, which is no surprise really, because the packaging is very light.
Initially there was also a tamper-proof sticker.
The cap closes securely, so the product won’t flow in a purse. The limiter works fine and gives the required amount of the mascara. However, it has a vexing peculiarity, about which I’ll tell you a little later.
✎ The brush wand:
Speaking about the shape, I would call this brush classy.
It’s pretty big length- and width-wise. The bristles are thin and fluffy and situated randomly on the brush.
It picks up the product weirdly. The biggest part of the product stays on the tip, whereas the bristles have less of it. Therefore it’s a hassle to apply. When I take it closer to my lashes trying to use the tip, it smears my eyelid insanely. If I use only bristles, they give too little of the product or I have to put on at least twenty coats or even more. In a nutshell - it’s a creepy brush for me.
✎ Ingredients:
aqua, synthetic beeswax, paraffin, styrene/acrylates/ammonium methacrylate copolymer, rice bran wax, bis-diglyceryl polyacycladipate-2, cetyl alcohol, ceteareth-33, propylene glycol, stearic acid, vp/va copoymer, palmic acid, tribehinin, aminomethyl propanediol, phenoxyethanol, glyceryl stearate, isohexadecane, polybutene, caprylyl glycol, polyquaternium-11, aluminium starch octenylsuccinate, benzoic acid, laureth-21, butylene glycol, parfum, myristic acid, sodium laureth sulfate, peg-40, glycerin, tetrasodium edta, sodium dehydroacetate, potassium sorbate, silica, coconut fruit extract, xanthan gum.
✎ The formula: its scent and color
This mascara is pretty thick right from the get go.
On the one hand, it’s good, because you won’t have to wait a week or two for the mascara to get a little thicker and more convenient to use.
On the other hand, it’s not that good, because it only gets thicker over time, which makes it more and more inconvenient to use. Plus, it makes clumps.
The texture is even and a little bit buttery. It doesn’t set on my lashes quickly, so it may smear everything around.
Well, now to the most important part: the coconut scent, which was actually the reason I purchased it. In reality the smell is chemical and sweet and reminds me of honey a little.
I don’t feel any coconut at all, no matter how hard I try. It’s an epic fail in this department.
The color is intense and pitch-black.
But as I’ve already mentioned, the mascara is pain in my neck to apply, so the color doesn’t play a big role here.
✎ The use and results:
A few words about my lashes: My lashes are very ordinary. They are medium-long and medium-thick.
They have a curl, but it’s not very striking. The lashes are thin and fair.
The mascara should be:
As for the curl, it’s not a big deal for me.
More than that, the process should be quick, which is very important to me. I need just to make a few strokes and it’s ready.
Well, now to my experience when applying:
This mascara is a no for me. I’ve already mentioned the main reason for that.
By the way, I had a similar problem with the Maybelline Lash Sensational. I had to apply a good deal of layers to get any visible results as well.
As for the Total Temptation, the result is alright for me only in one case out of 10. And I mean alright, not perfect. Plus, it smears my eyelid
Now to the results:
In the pictures you can see this very 1 in 10 case, when the effect is more or less pretty.
To be honest, I was even positively surprised when I applied it for this review and saw such results. It seems that the mascara felt something bad coming (negative review) and tried to do its best.
One coat:
As a rule I don’t usually put on two coats, but here I decided to show you how it looks:
It seems that my lashes got a little more volume and length, yet they are not as dense as the manufacturer promised. To top it off, they stick together, have clumps and look badly.
The pictures to compare:
One of the reviewers said that her lashes looked like sticks with this mascara on. And I totally agree with such a comparison. My lashes stick every which way. The mascara doesn’t smear my eyelid throughout the day, but it falls out extremely bad. The fallout is hard to remove. The product is buttery by itself, so the fallout is a hassle to sweep away.
On the plus side, it doesn’t cause any allergies.
Moreover, it doesn’t irritate my eyes, but once I cried when watching a film and this mascara was hurting my eyes so badly. So control yourself if you wear this Total Failure mascara on.
As for the makeup removal, it takes off with ease with any product designed specifically for this purpose.
✎ Overall thoughts:
It happens pretty often that I can’t decide how many stars to give this or that product before writing a review. But when I come to the point of overall thoughts, it gets better and I give the product the stars it really deserves. In case with the Total Temptation mascara I wasn’t sure if I should give it two or three stars.
So, let’s look at the list of how many requirements of mine it meets, i.e. I wanted it to be hypoallergenic, lengthening and volumizing. Also, it was to separate my lashes and make no clumps.
All in all, it meets only two of my requirements: It does lengthen my lashes and cause no allergies.
However, we add here such cons as fallout and hard application. Well… Sorry, Maybelline! I give you 2 stars today.
Honestly I see no reason to recommend this product to anyone, so don’t go for it.
That’s it for today.
Thank you for reading my reviews ♥
